What to expect at the gym
So you're joined a new gym, and you're eager to get started. So what can you expect when you start? As in anything new, knowing what to expect when you first enter the gym can make you first few visits a lot more fun and a lot less stressful! Almost all gyms and health clubs have some kind of induction program for new members, designed to show you where everything is, explain the rules, and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you might have.
So let's look at equipment first. In general, the equipment can be broken into two main categories - cardio and resistance. Cardio refers to machines designed to work your cardiovascular system (heart and lungs) and will include treadmills, steppers, stationary bikes, rowing machines, and elliptical trainers.
Resistance equipment is used to build or tone muscles. This includes various types of weights machines, plus free weights. A good workout program should include a mix of both cardio and resistance. As far as other clients are concerned, you'll usually find that most people are fully occupied with their own workouts, and are unlikely to be paying any attention to what you are doing. But don't be intimidated. If you ask politely, even the biggest body builder will usually be more than willing to explain something to you.
Clothing should be comfortable and appropriate. That means that clothing should allow you to move easily, with no loose bits to get stuck in machines, and not too much skin on display. For while you may count attracting the opposite sex as one of your reasons for joining a gym, causing an accident because people can't keep their eyes off your exposed flesh is not good gym etiquette.
