Individual vs classes for Pilates
Pilates is an exercise system developed in the 1920s which has become fashionable in recent years for its ability to build strength and flexibility without adding bulk. There are two main possibilities when beginning Pilates - 1on1 vs classes. So which is better for you? A quick look at both will clue you in to the relative merits.
A typical 1-on-1 Pilates session lasts between sixty and ninety minutes, and concentrates on a number of very precise, controlled movements. Some of the exercises are performed on a mat, while others utilize special machines involving pulleys, springs and weights.
1-on-1 Pilates concentrates on the alignment of the spine. Exercises are very precise, with the correct alignment of the hips, knees and shoulders being crucial. These are complex exercises which will improve your breathing, body mechanics, coordination, strength and flexibility. The advantage of a 1-on-1 session is the undivided attention of the instructor to a student's specific needs, and the ability to cater for individual needs such as previous injuries.
For those on a more limited budget, a group class is a good way to start. Group classes should have a manageable student-teacher ratio, no more than fifteen students per teacher, so the instructor can monitor each individual's form and progress. You should look for a class that matches your experience - beginner, intermediate or advanced. Classes can be themed around specific props like the balance ball, resistance band or the Pilates circle, which provides variety and increases the challenge of a class.
It is also possible to find classes designed around a particular sport, such as golf, tennis, or swimming, while combo classes which mix Pilates with other activities such as yoga to produce classes such as "Yogalates" are increasingly popular.
