Pilates

The Pilates Method is a unique exercise system that aims to develop body awareness. The end result? You will improve your body's postural and alignment habits, thus increasing your flexibility and ease of movement.

The system was developed by Joseph Pilates, a German who at various times worked as a circus performer, boxer and self-defense instructor. He began to develop an exercise program while interned during World War I, coming up with a technique of physical fitness designed for a confined space. Later, while working as an orderly in a hospital he came up with his famous piece of equipment the "Cadillac", made by attaching springs to hospital beds to help support the limbs of patients who were unable to walk.

After emigrating to the USA in the early 1920's he opened a 'body-conditioning studio' in New York City in 1926. It soon became very popular with the dance community, offering dancers a chance to improve their technique or recover from injuries. His method is summarised in two booklets, "Your Health", published in 1932, and "Return to Controllogy", 1945. At its heart, Pilates is based upon a thorough understanding of human anatomy of the human body. A qualified teacher uses this information to create a programme for each client that will restore a greater sense of balance. Benefits of the method include:

  • General fitness and body awareness
  • Excellent both pre and post natal
  • Injury prevention
  • Remedial and rehabilitation work
  • Improvement of technique for athletes and dancers

It is also highly beneficial for children from 12 years-old, and the elderly.
