Yoga
Yoga originated in India over 4000 years ago. The word yoga means union, and is often interpreted as the union of mind, body and soul. Although yoga takes many forms, the one most people in the West are familiar with is Hatha Yoga. Hatha means balance, with Ha meaning the sun and Tha the moon, and traditionally it works on the body as a preparation for deeper practices like meditation.
Many people who practice yoga talk very positively about it. Why? It's simple - practicing yoga makes them feel better and look better. As well as being a great way to get in shape, yoga also helps people to relax and unwind. As a fitness tool it will increase strength, stamina and flexibility. Its efficacy as a tool for weight loss is less certain, but it will certainly tone and shape the body.
Research shows that yoga can be a powerful tool in staying healthy. In addition to helping to control anxiety, it can help reduce asthma, arthritis, blood pressure, back pain, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue, epilepsy, diabetes, headaches, and stress. Many of the benefits seem to occur as a result of the effects yoga has on the circulation and the internal organs from adopting the various poses. It also stimulates the immune system.
Finally there are the psychological or spiritual effects. Those who regularly practice yoga have a higher self esteem, are more relaxed and suffer less from stress. So for a workout that can help you to feel better spiritually, emotionally, psychologically, and physically, consider this ancient form of exercise.
